“Hear Our Cry” was written in response to the true story of twelve young boys and their soccer coach who were trapped for eighteen days in Thailand’s Tham Luang cave in 2018—a global event that moved hearts and united nations.
In the years since the rescue, multiple cinematic projects have revisited the story, including a National Geographic documentary, a feature film directed by Ron Howard, and both a scripted series and documentary released by Netflix. The continued retelling speaks to the enduring power of the event and its relevance in a world longing for reminders of collective courage and compassion.
“I believe we keep returning to this story because we need this truth right now,” MAKIE shares. “Not long ago, people from all over the world came together—across cultures, faiths, and disciplines—to save these boys. It’s a reminder of what’s possible when love, hope, science, strategy, and faith work together.”
The story holds deep personal meaning for MAKIE. Her stepson, who is half-Thai and the same age as the boys at the time of the rescue, worked on Netflix’s Thai Cave Rescue alongside her husband, who served as stunt coordinator and played the role of David Ellsworth, one of the rescue divers. That proximity to the story brought its emotional weight closer to home—especially as a parent imagining the fear, hope, and endurance experienced by the boys and their families.
Written with longtime collaborator Gene Micofsky, “Hear Our Cry” also features a beautiful cello line, played by Simone Vitucci. The song stands as a quiet reflection on unity, prayer, perseverance, and the belief that our greatest ideas and acts of courage are often inspired by something higher than ourselves.
May this story—and this song—serve as a reminder that when we come together with love, hope, and faith, we are capable of extraordinary things.
